The European Green Deal has firmly established the political intend to counteract climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Current actions focus on the energy and transportation industries. However, the producing industries will clearly become the next target areas for emission reductions. As a clear indication, the member states of the European Union have already initiated an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) on Hydrogen Technologies and Systems. This program does not only address hydrogen production and infrastructure as well as hydrogen propelled transportation, but also the use of hydrogen to transform the steel, chemical and cement industries.The presentation will discuss the challenges for the chemical industry associated with the transition of Germany and Europe from fossil-based to CO2-emission free energy supply. Replacing fossil energy by renewable energy is not only a technical challenge, it also requires large investments in the distribution grid infrastructure. Independent of the necessary and yet to come grid expansion, energy demand can be expected to widely outpace renewable electricity supply. Therefore, efficient use and value-oriented allocation of energy will be mission critical.The chemical industry is one of the three most energy-intensive sectors. Therefore the increasing use of renewable energy is the key lever for its transformation and requires adjustment of its processes, assets and product portfolio. Regulatory as well as market forces will equally foster this transition. BASF, the largest chemical company in Europe, is re-designing the production such that (almost) CO2-emission free technologies replace currentprocesses based on fossil energy sources and raw materials. The presentation will focus on the challenges associated with transforming a complex system of production processes, the changes in the energy sources and the solutions needed to facilitate the transformation process. It will analyse the areas of change and their effect on scope 1, 2 and three emissions, which determine the carbon footprint of chemical products.
