Computing optimal drug dosing schemes for PKPD models using optimal control theory

Abstract

Providing the optimal dosing strategy of a drug for a patient is one of the main objectives in pharmaceutical sciences and daily clinical application. We apply optimal control theory to pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) models to design this optimal personal dosing strategy. More precisely, we exploit the PKPD structures present, use Lagrangian techniques and directly compute the optimized drug doses. The resulting numerical scheme shows numerical efficiency and globalized convergence properties.
